Photo Challenge: Virtual Nature Quilt
August 1, 2021 @ 9:00 am – September 12, 2021 @ 5:00 pm
Participate in a Quilting Bee of a whole new variety, no sewing skills needed! Your challenge over the next 6 weeks is to create a virtual “quilt block” of nature photos taken at the Arboretum and arranged in the style of a nine-patch quilt block. We’ll “stitch” them all together into a virtual online nature quilt gallery filled with the beauty of the Arboretum as shown through the eyes of YOU, our visitors!
At it’s most basic, a nine-patch quilt block is just nine squares pieced together to form a larger square, however you may get as creative as you want by making each smaller square out of a compilation of even smaller squares, rectangles, or triangles! Have fun playing with texture, color, and composition as you arrange your images.
Submissions must be received by 5pm on September 12th to be included in our online exhibition, which will be featured on our website and Facebook page beginning September 15th.
This photo challenge is FREE and open to ALL Arboretum visitors!
To enter your virtual quilt block:
- Use a photo editing program to arrange your photos into a single three by three “nine-patch” quilt square. We recommend Canva if you need a free photo editor.
- Save the single square image as a .jpg or .png file type.
- Submit by emailing the file along with any information you’d like displayed with your quilt square – such as your name, age, and/or where you’re from – to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “Photo Quilt Submission” by 5pm on September 12th.
- Only submit photos you have taken yourself or have permission to use. Quilt squares should be your own original artistic work!
